Best Netflix VPN in Australia 2020

We wanted to check which one is the best VPN for Netflix, and this is why we tried more than 5,000 tests on a number of 59 VPNs. Each VPN was tested with thirty different country Netflix versions which also included the iPhone apps and Android to check which can defeat the Netflix VPN ban.

Netflix’ library, although huge, has a great deal of content under geographical restrictions as a result of copyright agreements. What this means is that your country in a way can limit the films and TV shows which are at your disposal for watching. This, however, can be outsmarted with the use of a VPN.

In today’s article, we will present a list of 7 VPNs that can operate with Netflix and later we will cover in detail the results from the tests of Netflix VPN. In the end, we will give instructions on how to exploit the VPN as well as troubleshoot common issues.

Some of the best VPNs for Netflix that we recommend for the year of 2020:

  1. ExpressVPN Best VPN for Netflix. It works reliably with some of the biggest countries Netflix. Fast speeds. Including 30-day money-back guarantee for VPN services.
  2. NordVPN -Budget-friendly. A reliable choice for Netflix.
  3. CyberGhost -Functions well. Great for beginners apps.

If you used VPN to connect to  Netflix and you had no success because of the occurrence of Netflix proxy error do not despair as there is a chosen set of VPNs that can defeat the Netflix block.

Our list of the best Netflix VPNs is based on more than 5000 tests plus as a bonus feature, we include detailed instruction on their use.

The tests proved that it is difficult to beat the detection algorithm of Netflix VPN.

Netflix in connection with most VPNs reacts with an error message with an error code m7111-5059.

In the everlasting battle between users, Netflix, and VPN providers there is a constant flux and something that is working today may not be functional tomorrow so there are new locations and servers continually added.

Best VPNs for Netflix

On the basis of the conducted tests here are the leading VPNs for Netflix.

1. ExpressVPN

  • Unblocks Netflix in browser: Yes
  • Unblocks Netflix App: Yes

ExpressVPN is the top choice because it owns a Netflix page and there are a number of server locations that successfully unblock Netflix. Oftentimes there is a change so if you want to connect to a server you would need to ask the live chat support at the site of ExpressVPN which server you should use for a connection. One great thing is that you can check if it works as they provide a 30-day money-back guarantee. The speeds for streaming in HD are smooth and with no buffering.

ExpressVPN unblocks Netflix on each of the tested platforms and these include Mac, Android, Windows, iOS, Linux, Amazon Fire TV, and some wifi routers. You can connect to 5 devices simultaneously. In addition, each subscription is with MediaStreamer smart DNS proxy. The app clearly states the servers that are operational and fully functional for streaming. The app is novice-friendly and simple to use. PrivateVPN was rated excellent in the speed tests, which means that you can watch Netflix shows in HD.

There are many others which function

There is a whole bunch of VPNs that can function with Netflix, but they did not make the list of top 7. The reasons for this are various from inconsistency, privacy issues, incapacity to work on mobile, the speed with buffering and related. Netflix is constantly trying to block VPNs, and this is why our list contains only the ones that have proven record and are consistently successful with overcoming the proxy error. This is why we would rather not recommend some that operate and are functional today but the case may not be such tomorrow.

Some VPNs, which occasionally work with Netflix

  • AirVPN
  • Avast SecureLine
  • BlackVPN
  • CactusVPN
  • FrootVPN
  • Ironsocket
  • Le VPN
  • McAfee Safe Connect
  • Norton Wifi Privacy
  • Private Internet Access
  • ProXPN
  • PureVPN
  • SlickVPN
  • StrongVPN
  • Torguard
  • VPN Tunnel
  • VyprVPN
  • Zenmate

VPNs which DO NOT work with Netflix

Unblock-Us does not operate with Netflix and does not function on all devices since 2016 so our suggestion is to choose another VPN from the list of top 7.

Just like the previous one, this one also does not work with Netflix anymore. There was an official announcement that Netflix blocked Unlocator. They are working on a solution but we have not seen any results so far.

Since 2017, Buffered no longer can unblock Netflix in Windows or MacOS. Although the customer’s support has announced that they are working out a solution so far there is no update.

Although Unotelly is advertising itself to be successful at carrying out great service and support to customers since 2016 this tool has not been able to unblock Netflix streaming services.

We blacklisted Hola due to their history of taking advantage of users’ peer-to-peer networks from Netflix accounts which were later used for distribution of pornography, pirated materials, and carry out (DDoS) attacks against sites.

Tunnelbear does not mention Netflix in its listing and database and only talks about it in articles about troubleshooting in reference to geographical restrictions. So, if you are looking for a tool to unblock Netflix just skip this one.

Although GetFlix debuted fast and being affordable as a service became quickly popular in unblocking Netflix this did not last long as Netflix blocked the users as well as GetFlix.

HideIPVPN and Overplay

HideIPVPN, as well as Overplay both in 2016, stopped offering services for unblocking and accessing some sites such as Netflix servers and services so neither DNS proxy nor VPN works. So both of the companies stopped struggling and resisting against Netflix.

Netflix in 2016 tested Blockless but unfortunately, the tool failed the test.

Opera VPN

Opera VPN, is a part of the Opera browser and has not been able to unblock any Netflix content.

The way to use VPN with Netflix

The use of a VPN with Netflix is straightforward if you have support from the provider. You can sign for VPN service and just stick to these guidelines:

If you would like to use VPN on Netflix just perform the steps presented below:

  1. First step is to download as well as install the app. You can download it from the provider’s sites or the marketplace for apps.
  2. Choose a VPN server from the US which is able to unblock Netflix and if not certain which is the right one for you you can always contact the customer service or the site of the provider.
  3. You should connect to the chosen VPN. When you establish the connection, and you have a Netflix subscription just open it in Google or Chrome browser or app and enjoy watching Netflix.
  4. If you come across some issues communicate with customer support. You can adjust some settings on the device, for example, IPv6 or DNS.

Why some VPNs work while others don’t?!

VPN users are usually blocked by Netflix on the basis of their IP addresses. Although we can not say something on the behalf of Netflix what we can conclude is that it seems to blacklist IP addresses that belong to popular VPN servers. Most of the VPNs can not win in the struggle with Netflix because the company has the ability to block a full spectrum of IP addresses that can be found in a data center that hosts VPN servers.

Our list of top 7 VPNs was successful in overcoming the ban that Netflix is imposing and managed to use at least one location or server. It will be illusional to say that these work all the time but what is important to know is that all of them are well prepared to replace the servers which Netflix blacklisted and replace them with the ones that are functional. It takes time, professional services and of course financial resources and all the recommended VPNs from the list are consistently trying and investing in keeping up with Netflix-unblocking servers.

Why use a VPN with Netflix?

Netflix has more than 125 million subscriptions worldwide and VPN is a tool that is not designed to trick websites or apps about the location but it is a tool that is recommendable from privacy issues. This is why we also recommend using a VPN.

The ban of VPNs by Netflix is a kind of method to satisfy the requirements of copyright holders. The blockage of the users is happening regardless of the location and on the basis of proxy detection, which is not exactly fair to the Netflix subscribers. This pressures the subscribers to switch off the VPN that on the other hand endangers their privacy especially if they are on public wi-fi and traveling abroad.

It is your right to make use of the VPN, and the users should not be pressured to choose between entertainment and privacy.

What if we use smart DNS proxies?

Unotelly, Overplay, or Unblock-US is smart DNS proxies that in the past had been successful in unblocking Netflix until it started to block connections coming from VPN servers and then the users started switching to the services mentioned above. These servers are used to monitor the DNS request that your device sends. What does this mean? A DNS request is a way of finding which names of domains such as “” can be associated with relevant servers. When it comes to Netflix, if a DNS request is registered for this domain, this proxy shall send the traffic from the browser via the server to a Netflix server in the United States, and in this way, the DNS server and the IP address shall be changed.

This was functional for a couple of months when Netflix realized and as a result, released crackdown that blocked the majority of the users of smart DNS proxies. Nowadays there are some such proxies that can be successful at unblocking Netflix and one of them that proved its consistency is the Media Streamer from ExpressVPN. A great thing is that this proxy is received with each subscription of ExpressVPN. You can use it by default or you adjust the settings individually when there is a connection to VPNs. If you want to learn more you can always check some of the ExpressVPN reviews.

Which countries will allow VPNs to work if you want to watch US Netflix Abroad?

All the VPN services that you can see on our list should be able to unblock US Netflix everywhere and in each country of your travel with exception of countries with media restrictions and censorship or active blockage of the VPNs such as China (there is another list of recommended VPNs for there). So almost in any other country you can use the VPN, including but limited to almost all European Union countries, UK, Canada, New Zealand, Israel, Ireland, South Africa to stream Netflix from US version.

Can we access the Netflix of other countries?

One VPN which is successful at unblocking US Netflix might not be successful to unblock other countries. We must say that the American one is the most popular but there are other countries with high demand and these are Brazil, the UK, Italy, Spain, and France. In addition, one should carry out additional research if the recommended work for the relevant country where you would like to work.

Unblocking the Netflix app with VPN on a router

If you use for example Firefox or Chrome browser you are not expected to have issues with streaming content as all the recommended VPNs on the list most often direct you to American Netflix because DNS requests and traffic that had been sent via VPN shall stop Netflix to determine the truthful location.

When we are discussing the native apps, we should be aware that the apps can bypass DNS routers that VPN usually uses and the requests can be sent to a public server (DNS). What this does is, it allows Netflix to find out the correct location of the users and block the user regardless of the fact that the VPN app is on. Both NordVPN and ExpressVPN thought of a way how to solve this issue and have proved successful. In addition, they work with Android and iOS so you can use whichever you chose from the two VPNs.

ExpressVPN as well as NordVPN are able to do their work on smartphones, tablets Android and iOS but they do not possess apps for some other devices such as smart TVs, Fire TV, game consoles, or others that do not have a VPN support. In this case, what you can do is configure or purchase a pre-configured router.

The VPNs that are unable to unblock the content on Android and iOS tablets and smartphones one of the best solutions is router configuration.

You should set the VPN on the wi-fi router of the connecting device. The process might be different in dependence on the firmware of the router and sometimes you will have to add new firmware on the VPN’s supporting router (Tomato and DD-WRT). If you are missing instructions check the website of the provider as they always have additional guidelines and details about the configuration.

If you are still in doubt whether this will work out or it seems too complicated for you what you can do is purchase a pre-configured router that ExpressVPN is selling together with router firmware free of charge that you can install on chosen routers. You can choose to purchase a router or just install free firmware on a router that is compatible. This should successfully unblock Netflix.

After you set up the VPN you should configure the firewall for forwarding DNS requests to the corresponding servers (or other relevant servers used by VPNs to overcome the ban of Netflix). If you need help with this, check the instructions given by the provider.

Netflix in a web browser vs App

If a VPN is successful at unblocking Netflix in a browser this is not a guarantee that it will be successful on mobile devices, smart TV or set-top boxes. The reason for this is that the browser uses DNS servers that are assigned in the OS, while the apps route the requests and direct them to the personal DNS servers that guarantee that the requests comply with the location of the VPN server of your device.

However, the Netflix app may override the DNS settings of the devices and pressure the requests of DNS to be directed to public DNS nameserver or the default ISP nameserver. The outcome is a mismatch between the location of the DSN requests and the location of the IP address of the user. This raises a red flag for the company and they realize that the users are having VPN or other proxies and this causes the occurrence of the message for proxy error message.

ExpressVPN, as well as NordVPN, came up with a solution on how to surpass the obstacles. We recommend both of them if you would like to watch Netflix via app.

How to Unblock Netflix on Apple TV

If you would like to watch AppleTV you must be aware that there is no VPN built-in support and this means that we must find other ways to route the traffic via VPN. We can suggest three options:

Watching Netflix with a VPN on Apple TV

  • First, connect to VPN on the Phone and iPad, afterward stream Netflix on the device. Using Airplay transfer it to Apple TV. Although not the same as watching Netflix on the Apple TV, it still can be functional if you use one of the suggested VPNS i.e. ExpressVPN and NordVPN.
  • Second, use a laptop for the configuration of a virtual router. Then the laptop is connected to the VPN and the and Apple TV to the wifi hotspot of the laptop. It is functional with most of the Mac and Windows laptops. If you need more info on how to do this on Mac or Windows make sure you read the instructions written in the tutorials.
  • The third option is the most advanced one in terms of technology so it is important to be familiar with it. You should flash the wifi router and the firmware that is VPN compatible and then you should configure the VPN. The process can be slightly different in dependence on the router as not all of them are DD-WRT and/or Tomato compatible. If you think this is quite a challenge for you you can choose to buy a pre-configured router for VPN sold by ExpressVPN.

Netflix VPN ban:  VPN providers statements

We wanted to hear first hand from the companies that were directly involved in the “fight” so some of them included NordVPN, ExpressVPN, VyprVPN, LiquidVPN, and Buffered.

The CIO of NordVPN Emanuel Morgan announced that they received a huge number of requests of users who wanted to access the service of Netflix but saying that there are a few numbers of VPNs that provide workaround with some alternatives. This is because there is a need for huge resources in context of the time, money and other types in order to satisfy the many requirements regarding privacy and security among others.

Netflix is using a blend of methods and techniques to block all the VPNs and proxies. Although there are many one of them is to identify the connections and their origin from data centers. The CEO of LiquidVPN, Dave Cox, explains that the app is making the subscribers use public DNS servers and changing the URLs consistently and they do geolocation. This is what makes it harder for the services which are supportive for the thousand of people who stream at the same time to refer packets of geolocation only via the personal servers.

The CEO of Buffered Jordan Fried, explains that the argument of Netflix against the banking address is that the owners of the copyrights and the restrictions that they impose refer to the location where you watch the content and not where the subscription fee comes from.

This is not only the case with Netflix but the same more or less applies to BBC iPlayer, Hulu, HBO as well as other providers. They all conducted a ban at certain levels for VPN. If the matter continues in this direction, streaming content would demand from the users to give up their privacy. Most of the VPNs are quite optimistic and believe that they will find solutions regarding the ongoing matter.

Unblocking Netflix across the globe: study

One report prepared by the European Commission about the availability of cross borders in the EU claims that the percentage of Netflix availability within the EU is 31%. What this means is that if you can watch one show in one country and the VPN is efficient with unblocking it, this is not a guarantee that it will work in another country – or If one VPN unblocks UK Netflix it may not do the same with the USA.

In addition, another comprehensive study was conducted to test VPNs (59 in total) that are effective in 30 states in a web browser or iOS and Android apps. The results from the report are here to help you out with your decision.

International Netflix VPNs

PrivateVPN were very successful in unblocking Netflix compared to other providers and in this is true for the three platforms, web browser, Android and iOS.

Out of 59 -43 VPNs were successful at the test with the Americal Netflix and this was followed by the UK Netflix. The American version remains the most wanted as the number of shows is huge compared to the libraries in other countries especially when we talk about the latest titles. So the VPNs are concentrated primarily on unblocking the American version.

Some of the countries with the most limited number of VPNs able to unblock the content were Belgium and Turkey and many of the VPNs do not have servers at all and for many these countries are not on the list of priorities.

The testing was conducted on the three platforms and around 1650 were registered on them. The most successful result was shown in unblocking in desktop browser with around 286 times, iOS with 197 cases and Android app with 184. The result proved negative on all VPNs that have mobile apps.

Many of the VPNs no matter the server location refer the subscribers to the American version. One example is NordVPN that regardless of the country it is connected to routes the requests to the US version, with the exclusion of Japan, Holland, UK, India, and France. The situation is the same with many other VPNs  (such as AirVPN or Surfshark) that redirect to US Netflix and the only change is in the names of the excluded countries.

Methodology and limitations

The test was conducted on the basis of the following methodology: established connection with VPN, and Netflix was opened in a browser or app. Afterwards, a video was played. If the streaming was fine, the VPN got a positive grade. If we had issues or doubts which server to use, the customer support provided advice.

To get a positive result on the test the VPN should unblock the videos without manual configuration,  meaning out of the box, and overcome the firewall with consistency (no need for repeated reconnection while searching for the IP address). If there were paid VPNs versions, those were used.

Some of the countries that were included in the test were: Australia, Brazil, Finland, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Denmark, France, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, India, Mexico, New Zealand, Italy, Netherlands, Russia, Norway, Romania, Poland, Singapore, Spain, Ukraine, South Africa, USA, Turkey, Switzerland, Thailand.

We tested the most popular VPNs to see which worked with Netflix in each country.

The tested VPNs among the many included these as well: Air VPN, Avast Secureline VPN, Buffered, CyberGhost, ExpressVPN,, Hotspot Shield, Hula,IPVanish, Kaspersky Secure Connection, LiquidVPN, McAfee Safe Connect, NordVPN, OneVPN, Private Internet Access (PIA), Private Tunnel, PureVPN, Speedify, TunnelBear, VyprVPN and many other.

Some smart DNS proxies can also be successful at unblocking such as Ironsocket DNS, ExpressVPN MediaStreamer, and Keenow Unblocker. However, those were not included in the test as the focus primarily was on the VPNs.

Is it legal?

Using VPN in order to watch Netflix is legal and no legal regulations forbid this.

However, the use of VPN to enter the Netflix library of another country is considered a breach of terms of use of the company.

Netflix is trying to enforce the rule and blocks connections and VPN providers but there are no penalties for the users attempting to use VPN. At the moment there are no legal actions taken against someone who have used VPN providers for streaming videos.

What do you think about our suggestions? Can you recommend some other that you know as successful of overcoming the anti-VPN firewall?
