Sony Australia today hosted a webinar to unveil a range of new products due to Australian retail sometime in the uncertain future. Here is an overview of what was demonstrated:

Sony's new 84-inch 4K TV will offer resolution at four times the current Full HD levels, according to Sony. Unlike most enormous TVs that require some distance between screen and eyes, Sony recommends sitting as close as possible to the screen. No price yet but Sony has flagged a release before the end of 2012.

The new Xperia Tablet S has a 9.4-inch screen (1280x800), runs Android 4.0 (ICS), and is powered by a quad core NVIDIA Tegra 3 Mobile Processor. There will be both Wi-Fi only and 3G models, while storage will be either 16GB or 32GB (expandable via SD Card). Its pictured above with a bespoke Sony cover that can convert the tablet into notebook mode. This is coming to retail mid-September. There's no RRP yet so let's assume it will be $579.

Pictured gratuitously in the snow, this is Sony's new Full HD Action Cam. Designed to compete with the very successful Contour models, this video camera is Wi-Fi enabled for instant sharing to smartphones, and then uploading to social media via available cellular networks. Still image capture is available at 16 megapixels, while there's also memory expansion via a MicroSD card slot (4GB card included). We have a price for this one - woohoo - it's RRP $399 and it's available from 1 October 2012.

Straight from the press release: "Action Cam ships with a ruggedised, waterproof housing and a universal tripod mount that is built to handle extreme environments, allowing you to concentrate on safety and composition while capturing full HD videos.  Within the housing, the camera is waterproof down to 60 metres and also has dirt and dust resistant seals that help make it impervious to mud, snow, rain and grime."

The new battleground in digital imaging is Wi-Fi cameras - combining the instant sharing of a smartphone with the excellent picture quality of an interchangeable lens camera. This is Sony's new NEX-5R, part of its well-regarding Alpha system camera range. In addition to Wi-Fi connectivity, this camera can support apps, which can be used to improve the photography experience and to streamline uploading to social media.

Selected features of this camera include: 16.1 megapixel sensor, Fast Hybrid AF, 10 frames per second shooting, 180-degree swivelling touchscreen with touch shutter function and Full HD movie recording. Of all of Sony's announcements today, this is Current.com.au's favourite. This camers is due in November 2012 - no pricing yet.

Finally, this is Sony's new Personal 3D Viewer, the HMZT2. Using this headset, TV watchers and gamers can be fully immersed in 2D or 3D Full HD content, according to Sony. The big change from the original model is weight - it's now 20 per cent lighter at 330 grams. The two screens inside the device are OLED, while audio is virtual 5.1 channel surround sound. This model is due at the end of October - no pricing yet.
