With a new financial year beginning this Sunday, the Fair Work Ombudsman has issued a reminder to businesses and employers across Australia to be aware of new pay rates that take effect on 1 July.

The pay rates will affect those employing adult and junior employees, as well as trainees, apprentices, employees with a disability and workers employed under piece rates, and increases will apply to the first full pay period on or after 1 July.

“Employers can go to the Fair Work Ombudsman’s website now to determine what the new pay rates will be,” said Fair Work Ombudsman Nicholas Wilson in a statement from the Federal Government department.

The website includes tools such as an Award Finder that can be used by employers to help “determine which Modern Awards apply to their employees, as well as the applicable classifications and pay rates, including base pay rates, allowances, overtime and penalty rates”.

There are also a range of troubleshooting tools and case studies for employers to utilise.

The announcement from the Fair Work Ombudsman follows a decision made by Fair Work Australia earlier this month to increase the national minimum wage to $15.96 per hour (or $606.40 per week) – an increase of 2.9 per cent. This Annual Wage Review decision also has implications for minimum rates, allowances, casual loadings and penalty rates, according to the Ombudsman.
