Panasonic Australia has attributed its website breach to "online vandalism", saying that it is "disappointing" that hackers choose to target well-known organisations. The electronics and appliance company was forced to take down its local site and redirect users to the global site after it was targeted by unknown parties yesterday (Thursday 7 June 2012).

"It’s difficult to know the motivation but it doesn’t seem to be anything more than online vandalism," said a Panasonic Australia spokesperson when asked why the website was attacked. "It’s a disappointing reality that well-known organisations such as ours tend to often be the target of such attacks."
The spokesperson said it would "take some time" to identify the who was responsible for the breach, with company's IT team currently investigating.
"Our experts are piecing this together today," continued the spokesperson.
"All we know is the consumer blog was targeted and that no transactional or customer information was compromised. Nonetheless we elected pull down the site as a precautionary measure.
"It’s obviously disappointing and we hope to have the entire site restored as quickly as possible."
