Apple admits new iPad falls far short of the 4G

If there’s one fruit that likes things its own way, it’s the apple. When it wants to be green, it’s green; when it wants to be crunchy, it’s crunchy; and when it wants to help mankind discover gravity it’s happy to hit a scientist in the head.

And if there’s one company that likes things its own way, it’s Apple. When it wants to dumb Flash, it dumps Flash; when it wants sue Samsung, it sues Samsung; and when it wants to pretend that 3G is actually 4G, it calls a 3G device the iPad Wi-Fi + 4G.

But Apple hasn’t had it all its own way this week, with several media outlets pointing out to confused fanboys that the new iPad will not work on Telstra’s nascent 4G network, no matter how many times Apple writes ‘4G’ in a press release.

There’s nothing UnderCurrent likes more than a good mea culpa, and we think this is about as good as it’s going to get from Apple. Consider the following excerpts from Apple press releases and note the subtle changes.

The original iPad press release (8 March 2012)

Pricing & Availability
“iPad Wi-Fi + 4G will be available for a recommended retail price of AUD$679 inc GST for the 16GB model, AUD$789 inc GST for the 32GB model and AUD$899 inc. GST for the 64GB model. iPad will be sold through the Apple Store, Apple’s retail stores, and select Apple Authorised Resellers.”

The iPad is available press release (15 March 2012)

Pricing & Availability
“iPad Wi-Fi + 4G for ultrafast 4G LTE networks in the US and Canada and fast 3G networks around the world including those based on HSPA+ and DC-HSDPA, will be available for a recommended retail price of AUD$679 inc GST for the 16GB model, AUD$789 inc GST for the 32GB model and AUD$899 inc. GST for the 64GB model. iPad will be sold through the Apple Store, Apple’s retail stores, and select Apple Authorised Resellers.”

Unfortunately for frugal fanboys, the price didn’t come down as the number of Gs did.
