Sony has today announced the Australian launch of the Sony Personal 3D Viewer. The futuristic headset device allows consumers to view “2D and 3D content in the luxury of your living room, complete with the visual and audio experiences of being in a movie theatre,” while still staying in a personal entertainment bubble.

The 3D Viewer features a newly-developed high definition OLED panel which is designed to offer “high contrast, colour reproduction and fast response capabilities...for smoother and higher-quality videos” according to a Sony spokesperson.

It also features separate panels for the right and left eye to reduce crosstalk, a horizontal viewing angle of 45 degrees, and 5.1-channel Virtual Surround Technology sound. In the words of Sony, “the design of this device is such that it results in a feeling of deep immersion with any information unrelated to viewing being isolated”.

However, while the HMZT1 3D Viewer will go on sale this week (for a princely RRP $899), it will only be sold at Sony Centre concept stores and through the Sony website, denying other Australian retailers the opportunity to get their hands on the device.

Current.com.au has contacted Sony for comment regarding the retail ranging of its newest, high-concept product.
