American music streaming company Rdio has today launched in Australia, with music fans able to stream unlimited tracks from the major record labels on their computer, smartphone or tablet device.

In addition to the 12 million songs in Rdio’s library, there is also a social media element, with users able to share tracks and suggest music to other listeners. Although Rdio says this is a first for Australia, JB Now has had an integrated social media platform in its product since late last year.

There are two Rdio subscription options: a web-only based account (Rdio Web) costing $8.90 per month and an unlimited, multiple device and platform option (Rdio Unlimited), which costs $12.90 per month. In the United States, the comparable launch pricing was $4.99 and $9.99 respectively.

JB Now, Rdio's nominal brand agnostic rival, costs $25 per 3 months, $50 for 6 months and $80 for 12 months. When the mobile apps are released later this year, an upgrade charge of $3  will apply per month. That means at its most expensive, JB Now will cost $11.33 per month for web plus mobile access, and only $9.66 for the full service at its cheapest.

Rdio has apps for mobile streaming for Apple’s iOS devices, Android smartphones and tablets, BlackBerry, Windows Phone 7 and Sonos.

Music labels with ongoing support for Rdio include the Big Four (EMI, Sony, BMG and Warner) and several key independents.

Clearly wanting to ingratiate himself to his new market, Rdio CEO Drew Lerner was full of praise for the local music industry.

“Australia has a unique, thriving music culture that boasts a wealth of music artists across all genres,” Lerner said. “We believe Australians will be extremely excited about discovering new local and international music and accessing their digital music collections through any platform they want.”

Rdio is available on the web and on all major smartphone and tablet platforms.

Rdio offers a free 7-day trial subscription to prospective users.
