Reality renovating and building has been hugely popular on Australian television this year. Channel Nine lured Australian audiences with the high-intensity pursuits of Polly and Woz on The Block, and Channel Ten has found mixed success with its new reality-format show The Renovators.

Over at the ABC, success has come in the form of a show that sees affluent British couples creating designer-DIY houses in perpetually-rainy locales such as Bath, all while the indomitably swoon-worthy Kevin McCloud comments from the sidelines in a made-for-radio voice.

Grand Designs has been a hit with Australians (a re-imagined Grand Designs Australia television program has even been produced for the Lifestyle Channel) – so it only made sense that a hands-on expo experience would follow.

In the spirit of the MasterChef Live event that hit Sydney earlier this month, Grand Designs Live is a huge show for homemakers-to-be, set to kick off at the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre tomorrow.

The event will run for three days, and will feature an Expert Advice Centre, design ideas, sample rooms to wander through and a Grand Theatre that will host discussions and debate on issues in the building trade.

Miele is one of the key sponsors for the event (specifically the ‘Grand Kitchens and Bathrooms’ section). It will host the Miele Kitchen Theatre – a dedicated kitchen that will host cooking demonstrations from top chefs and allow show visitors to learn more about Miele appliances.

Philips will also have a strong presence at the event, as a key show sponsor and host of the Epcot-esque Philips House of the Future Theatre. The house of the tomorrow, today, will showcase “the latest technology, design and innovation from the home” with hourly information sessions for visitors.

The show will begin at 10AM on each day, and will run until 9PM on Friday, 6PM on Saturday and 5PM on Sunday. Further information and tickets are available at the Grand Designs Live website.

Miele will have a dedicated kitchen area at Grand Designs Live.

Philips will get technical with its House of the Future.
