Sony Australia has recalled three Bravia LCD TVs due to the risk that they could “ignite internally”, leading to smoke emitting from the panel during use.

According to Product Safety Recalls, these Bravia TVs “May contain a component that in a rare number of cases could over-heat and ignite, possibly resulting in melting of the upper rear casing of the television.”

The affected TVs have the following model numbers: KDL-40X3100, KDL-40XBR and KDL-40W3100. These TVs were on sale nationally between 1 July 2007 and 31 December 2008.

"This issue came to our attention via a report from Sony Corporation in Japan that a limited number of these products might contain a component affected by a quality issue, which in a rare number of cases may over-heat and ignite inside the television and may possibly result in the melting of the upper rear casing of the television," said a Sony spokesperson. "To date, there have been no reports of any damage to other property or physical injuries."

"However, as part of our ongoing commitment to customer service and satisfaction, and as a precaution, Sony is voluntarily initiating a programme to perform a free inspection and, if necessary, a free repair."

Customers owning these TVs are asked to contact Sony Australia to arrange for a free inspection and, if necessary, a free repair.

Furthermore, if any customers note that their TV isn’t working properly — with unusual noises, smell or smoking listed as examples — they should immediately stop using the TV, unplug the power cable and contact Sony Australia.
