UPDATE: An Acer spokesperson has contacted Current.com.au to inform us that the 16GB model originally discussed in this article will not be released in Australia. All other details are correct.

Acer has today announced the release of its latest Android Honeycomb tablet, the 7-inch Iconia Tab A100.

More mobile than its stablemate, the 10-inch A500, this tablet crams the major features of the earlier model into a smaller unit, clearly targeted at users who want to take their tablet around in their handbag or suit pocket.

The A100 is available with a somewhat rare 8GB of memory . This smaller option provides an affordable choice to consumers who want their tablet to do the basics well but either don’t need to fill it up with music and videos or are happy to use the MicroSD card slot to expand memory (up to 32GB).

The A100 has an Nvidia 2 Tegra mobile processor with a Dual Core, 1Ghz CPU. There’s a 5-megapixel rear camera for images and video and 2MP front-facing camera for video chat. In addition to the MicroSD card slot, the A100 has a MicroUSB port and HDMI (D) out.

Connectivity includes Wi-Fi (b/g/n) and Bluetooth 2.1, but there’s no 3G.

The 8GB A100 is RRP $479. This tablet is available “early September”, with Acer continuing its $100 gift voucher redemption program.

Acer is distributed in Australia by Bluechip Infotech, Ingram Micro and Synnex.

The most distinctive feature of the A100 is its blue back.
