The 2011 Australian International Design Awards were held in Melbourne on Friday, with Nespresso, Fisher & Paykel and Dyson amongst the winners in the Consumer category. The overall prize for Design Award of the Year went to a kids playground designed by Icon.

Once again, appliance and consumer electronics suppliers were well represented in the accolades. This is the third year in a row Nespresso has picked up a Design Award, with local general manager Renaud Tinel thanking manufacturing partner De’Longhi.

“To be awarded a Design Award for the third consecutive year is indicative that Nespresso is truly a leader in design and innovation,” Tinel said. “Working in close partnership with De’Longhi, we have been able to bring the unique Pixie range to market and make it a highly desirable product amongst consumers.”

Also winning awards for kitchen appliances were Hurom for its HU-300 Juice Extractor, Breville for the Kitchen Wizz Pro and Ilve for its Epsilon Island Rangehood. The Fisher & Paykel CookSpace was the only oven to win a coveted Design Award.

“We are absolutely delighted that not just one, but two of our kitchen appliances have been recognised – the only oven or dishwasher to receive these prestigious awards,” said Fisher & Paykel general manager, marketing, Peter Russell, referencing F&P's subsidiary Good Design win for the DishDrawer Wide. “These products are part of a modular 90-centimetre underbench product range; a design philosophy led by ergonomic insights; a range that allows unprecedented flexibility in terms of kitchen design and layout."

Dyson maintained its streak at the Awards, backing up last year’s win for the Air Multiplier with a Design Award for the Dyson City barrel vacuum.

Philips was the only personal care brand to receive an Award, with the SensoTouch3D outshaving the competition. Bowers & Wilkins was rewarded for its venture into Apple AirPlay technology with the Zeppelin Air being recognised, while Samsung was also feted for its Series 9 notebook PC.
