MELBOURNE, VIC: Forty-four days after Current.com.au first asked Nintendo Australia to explain the price differences on the 3DS compared to the US version, we have received a response.

Here in full is a Nintendo spokesperson’s response when asked if the organisation was price gouging Australian consumers:

“Apologies for the delay in answering your question: it's been quite busy in the lead up to the launch of Nintendo 3DS.

“In regards to your question regarding price differences between regions, there is a price difference between regions across many forms of consumer electronics and other retail categories. We believe that AU$349.95 is great value for the world's first 3D handheld gaming console that can also take 3D photos and display 3D movies, without the need for special glasses.”

Although this response doesn’t actually answer the price gouging question, it is a response nonetheless. We have refrained from publishing any Nintendo PR in the period between sending these questions and receiving a response, so in exchange for at least some co-operation from Nintendo Australia, here is the most recent news they have released:

“The Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo’s new device which offers portable entertainment in 3D without the need for special glasses, launches tomorrow in Australia and New Zealand on 31 March,” said a spokesperson, though not necessarily the same one.

“Play games in 3D, take 3D photographs and enjoy engaging new social applications that will offer a new surprise every day. Nintendo 3DS will launch in Cosmos Black and Aqua Blue alongside 13 3D games including nintendogs + cats, Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Shadow Wars, PES 2011 3D, Rabbids 3D, Combat of Giants Dinosaurs 3D and The Sims 3.”

Wow, how very helpful =P

Oh, alright, so I should pay $100 more in one country than the others, just because you feel like it. Who was it that said Nintendo cares about their fans again?

the reason games are more expensive in aus is because australia is a much smaller market, what might sell 2 million in the us will probably only sell 200,000-500,000 it is a very reasonable business decision to price it like this, in fact i was expecting $400 rather than $350.

I don't think anyone said Nintendo cares about their fans... Regardless, stop caring so much. Either buy it, or if you can't afford it - don't. Nintendo have to factor in import tax, GST tax, a much, much smaller market -- not to mention a decent economy. Truth is that Aussies can afford $350, so why not sell it at that? Also, the whole "refraining from publishing Nintendo PR" is a laugh... Did you call Nintendo for a comment? Or just send them an email and got upset when they didn't respond? I mean, I doubt you consider yourself as hardcore news media, but even a school paper knows to follow up!

Patrick: I send Nintendo the questions on 14 February 2011, then chased them up on 17 Feb, 23 Feb, 25 Feb, 28 March and 30 March. I think that's a little bit better than your average school newspaper.

the point is not that we can afford to pay 350 for it the point is why shud we pay more when our dollar is stronger then the US we should be paying less so it's kinda stupid that we have to pay more

People will just buy online & retailers will lose out, only hard core gamers will fork $350 cos they can't wait,it's a hand held game machine marketed for kids wtf $350. psp was $400 in aus at launch & was a flop
