SYDNEY, NSW: Garmin has identified potential defects and hazards in the nüvi GPS range, causing an Australasian recall.

A possible fire hazard has been identified due to the overheating of batteries from certain units. The defect applies to nüvi products that contain a specific printed circuit board (PCB) used in conjunction with the battery – which Garmin points out – is sourced from a third party provider.

Garmin has set up a website to coordinate the voluntary recall. Consumers can enter the nüvi serial number to see if their device may be affected. In Australia, Garmin will replace the entire nüvi device and return it to the affected customer free of charge.

“Although there have been no injuries or significant property damage caused by this issue, Garmin is taking this action out of an abundance of caution,” said the Garmin website.

The models affected include: nüvi 200W, 250W, 260W and 760.
