Australian Apple fans to be disappointed by iPhone 4 this week

By Keri Algar

SYDNEY, NSW: Apple has announced it will roll out the iPhone 4 in Australian stores Friday 30 July 2010, showcasing a swag of novel features, alongside an embattled reputation.

The iPhone 4 features FaceTime, making video calls over Wi-Fi to other iPhone 4s possible, as well as a new Retina display boasting the highest resolution display in mobile phones. It is also the thinnest smartphone on the market.

The new operating system incorporates over 100 new features, while the App Store offers over 200,000 apps including the new iMovie app built just for iPhone 4.

However, overseas the iPhone 4 has been plagued by controversy over problems with its antenna and inaccurate signal strength indicators, since its release over a month ago.

To fix the problem, Apple initially suggested users purchase a $30 bumper case (covering the outer rim), but following a public relations debacle the company has since decided to offer the case in Australia for free, until 30 September 2010.

Apple also recommends iPhone 4 users update the new operating system to iOS 4.1 to fix the software glitch which provided erroneous signal strength information.

In a coy marketing move, Samsung has offered disgruntled iPhone 4 users in the UK, who complained via Twitter, a free Galaxy S phone, giving users to chance to test out the Android operating system.

However, Samsung confirmed this offer is not extended to Australia, according to a representative speaking to Current.com.au yesterday.

Mobile providers Optus and Telstra are already publicising competitive cap plans in anticipation for bumper sales following Friday’s launch.

iPhone 4 will be available for outright purchase for RRP $859.
