Samsung leads SBS refrigeration market

By Grant Shepherd

SYDNEY: According to recent GfK data, Samsung Electronics Australia is now the leader in the side-by-side refrigeration category and holds the number one position in both value and units sold for 2009.

According to the results, Samsung achieved a 29.3 per cent value share and a 31.5 per cent unit share in the total side-by-side market.

Mark Leathan, head of marketing, consumer electronics at Samsung Australia, commented on the pleasing results.

“2009 has been an incredibly strong growth year for Samsung Home Appliances. We are constantly working to develop innovative and unique technologies to make consumers’ lives easier,” he said.

“It has been the success of Samsung’s unique SPACE technology, and the developing strength of the French door fridge category that has really helped to cement our leadership position in the SBS segment.”

This SPACE technology was developed to give consumers a fridge that has the largest amount of inside space in the smallest footprint. The purpose of this is to ensure the unit will fit into existing kitchens.

SPACE technology works by reducing the thickness of the refrigerator walls and gives consumers 100 litres of extra space.

According to Samsung, the company will continue to focus on the French door category due to the fact it eliminates the centre divider and provides bigger, wider storage than a conventional SBS.
