Telstra slashes broadband prices to lure high content downloaders

By Patrick Avenell

SYDNEY, NSW: Telstra has today slashed its BigPond download rates as it seeks to compete with the boutique internet service providers (ISPs) that target movie and TV show downloaders.

According to a media release, Telstra will offer the following new deals from 1 December 2009:

-Ten times more data allowance on the entry level plan: BigPond Turbo ADSL or Cable plan offering 2GB of included data for $29.95 per month for 24 months when combined with a Telstra home phone on a single bill.

-New high usage plans of 100GB and 200GB “to satisfy the growing demand for movie downloads and more family members connecting at the same time”.

-The BigPond Elite Liberty (12GB): ADSL 2+ plan for $59.95 per month for 24 months - when combined with a Telstra home phone on a single bill.

Talking about this decision is Telstra Consumer acting group managing director, Glenice Maclellan.

"Gone are the days when broadband was used only to check email or internet surf. Australian families now also use broadband to download videos, play online games, or check social networking sites all at the same time," said Maclellan.

In the same release, Maclellan announced two new bundles plans incorporating Foxtel from Telstra on 24 month plans.

"Our new HomePremium bundles will also be available in selected areas of Melbourne offering access to new lightning fast internet access as part of Telstra's recently announced Melbourne HFC cable network footprint completion. Plans include 100GB or 50GB of downloads combined with a home phone and optional Foxtel from Telstra on a 24 month plan,” she said.

"These new plans coupled with the increased bandwidth of our upgraded cable network means families who connect multiple computers and devices to the internet will receive a better internet experience when they are all online at the same time.”
