TDK to sponsor ‘DJ Idol', promote headphones

By Patrick Avenell

SYDNEY: TDK has announced it is continuing its sponsorship of the Australian preliminary rounds of the DMC World DJ Championships. These events will be held throughout July in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane and Perth.

This is the second year that TDK has sponsored the event, with winners progressing through to eventually compete in a global competition. TDK is also sponsoring the event in New Zealand, Singapore and Hong Kong.

Speaking about the competition is Imation marketing and communications manager for TDK, Bree McKenzie. “It’s the ‘Australian Idol’ of DJ-ing — its aim is to discover new talent by giving young DJs a chance to perform to and impress industry figureheads as well as compete for the major title,” said McKenzie.

This comparison to Australian Idol is interesting, as the current champion, DJ Perplex, is yet to have an Australian Top 50 single. Heretofore, four of the five Australian Idol winners have secured Australian #1 singles.

Talking about the marketing opportunities this event provides, McKenzie said, “It’s an ideal environment to profile TDK’s Life on Record’s range of headphones, which following a successful Australian launch will be ranged throughout Asia Pacific, Europe and the US shortly.” (sic)

The first event is in Sydney on 17 July.
