Asus announces Eee PC 901

By Patrick Avenell

SYDNEY: Asus has announced the local release of the new Eee PC 901 with Intel Atom processor only two weeks after the 900 model went on sale.

The Eee PC 901 is similar to the 900-Series, with either white or black exteriors and both Windows or Linux operating sytsems. Memory also remains unchanged, with the Windows model coming with 12GB storage (4GB built in and 8GB flash), while the Linux model has 20 GB (4GB built in and 16GB flash). Both have 1GB DDR storage.

Other features to remain unchanged include the 1.3 megapixel webcam, Bluetooth and pre-N wireless connectivity. However, battery life is up thanks to the new 'Super Hybrid Engine' technology, with a predicted maximum 7.8 hours run time, subject to use.

Unlike the 900-Series, though, which splits its distribution between large retailers and smaller computer resellers depending on operating system, the 901 will sell only through computer resellers.

Information on the 901 was originally released at Computex in Taiwan, along with the Eee 1000. This new model features an upgraded battery and the aforementioned Atom processor.

The 901's launch is right on the coattails of the Eee PC 900 in Australia, with Asus apparently, rushing the new model to Australia in response to several calls from retailers.

More on the Asus range can be found here.
