SYDNEY: Optus has said the Australian iPhone launch will “most likely be in June”, and put a potential price tag on the hotly anticipated device.

A spokesperson at the Optus stand at CeBIT gave the potential date when asked yesterday, and estimated the price tag would likely be “around $700 or so”.

The comments are first details on the local release since Optus and Vodafone announced distribution rights earlier this month. At the time, both companies refused to divulge further information past their initial statements about the launch being “later this year”.

Many in the industry have already stated their belief that the 3G iPhone will be shown at Apple’s Worldwide Developer’s Conference, which starts from 6 June in San Francisco. Apple itself has stated it will display the second generation of the iPhone’s operating system at the conference.
